Imerovigli

Santorini Settlements and Villages

Imerovigli is located 3km away from Fira, at the fringe of the caldera, with a view to the peculiar and deserted red rock of Skaro, which was once a Venetian kasteli – enclosed settlement (see also Ia).

Imerovigli

Outstandingly decorated bright white houses, colourful yards filled with blossoming flowers and a perfect harmony between hotels and the natural environment along both the length and width of the cliff offer an incredible visual feast to the eye. The stone paved street leading to the settlement of Firostefani and the capital of the island Fira is surrounded with dry stone walls, while, not far from there, donkeys run free in golden fields.

The settlement was created in the middle of the 16thC and it was baptized after pirates – conquerors of the island (Imerovigli – observation post throughout the day). When the Venetian leader, Markos Sanoudo conquered Santorini in 1207, he raised their flag on Sakros' castle; it is most likely that it was then that the island was renamed from Thira to Santa Irini, thus, Santorini.

Sakro's kasteli was guarding the Western entrance point to the island and it was never conquered throughout its 600 year old life. The castle, which proudly takes its place on Skaros rock, has a long history and is worth a visit (of course by foot!) following the path connecting the rock with Imerovigli (about 20mins walk). Don’t forget to visit the small church located at the front side of Sakros, which is visible from the ship as you enter the caldera.
